How Do Faux PVC Leather Compare to Real Leather

Faux leather, also known as "leatherette", or "vegan", is often considered a cheaper alternative to genuine leather. For good reason, genuine leather is highly sought after. Genuine leather is warm and inviting, has exceptional durability and improves with age. In our previous blog, we covered two types of faux leather: bicast and bonded. We continue our comparison with two other types of faux leather: PVC faux leather fabric (PU faux leather fabric) and bonded leather (bonded leather).

PU Faux Leather Fabric

A 100% polyurethane finish is applied to a base material to make PU leather fabric. Base materials are typically made from polyester, cotton or nylon. To imitate genuine leather, a roller applies an artificial grain pattern on the surface. The artificial grain is usually very uniform.

PVC leather fabric looks very similar to PU. PVC leather fabric can be made from polyvinylchloride and plasticizers. The base materials are usually polyester, cotton or nylon.

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather is made of organic materials, usually bovine hides. Natural collagen fibers are interwoven in intricate ways, giving them superior durability to man-made, woven products. There are many types of leather, and each type has a different finish. While some finishes offer greater protection from daily wear than others, leather is all inherently stronger because of its innate composition.

Buyer beware

The low cost of faux leather is appealing, but it is important that you consider the long-term financial value of your purchase. Although faux leathers can be attractive due to their ease of cleaning with harsh chemicals, many crack after only a few decades of use. The durability of genuine leather has been proven to last up to 10 to 20 years.
